Why Target Generation Y for your Network Marketing Business?

Born between 1977 and 1994 is Generation Y. They’re also known as Echo Boomers, but most commonly now as the Internet Generation. This group grew up with the internet, and it’s not just something they do, it’s part of their life.

At 60 million strong, more that 3 times the size of Generation X, the generation right before them, they’re the biggest thing to hit America since the 72 million baby boomers. And they’re not just tech-savvy, they’re entrepreneurial and ambitious to boot. They’re smart enough to get jobs, but many are finding that Corporate America doesn’t cut it. They’ve lived through the major corporate scandals including the collapse of Enron. They’ve watched their parents deal with downsizing, layoffs, and constant money stress. That’s why they’re turning in increasing numbers to an industry that most of their parents wouldn’t even consider – network marketing.

This group is perfect for network marketing. They’re open to trying new things. They’ve seen what the generation before them has gone through with the “old school” methods – go to college, get a job, work 40+ years, and retire – and that this hasn’t worked out especially well for many of them. They’re young, so in most cases they don’t have the responsibilities of mortgages, kids, and debt, so they’re able to sustain longer to get their business started.

Generation Y is looking for more than a paycheck. They want their work to be fun. They want to work with their friends. They want to be able to work from anywhere. That’s why these guys and gals are especially attracted to business opportunities like network marketing.

Most Gen Y’ers are still in touch with their friends from high school and college, and are extremely social thanks to online networks like Myspace and Facebook, and also text messaging. They can spread the word rapidly when they run across something that might be fun and profitable. In addition, they’re socially conscious, so they’re intested in companies with eco-friendly products and with a mission.

So where are you going to find this generation? Probably not on your prospect list, or on a list of leads you bought. You’re best bet is to connect with them on the internet, through the social networks like Myspace, FaceBook and Youtube. But you can’t blast your opportunity at them, they’re way to sophisticated for that. They’ve also grown up in the spam generation, and anything that looks like spam is going to be rejected immediately. So how do you reach them?

You need to gain their trust, by giving them value. They’re very technologically oriented, so you’ve got to speak their language, and get to know them. You’ve got to put your information out their where they can find it on the search engines, or on the social sites, then let them explore, discover and ask questions on their own. Quite often, they’ll sign up for your opportunity without even talking to you!

What’s the best way to create this kind of environment? I’ve found a program called The Renegade University to be extremely valuable in stepping me through setting up my own social web, in order to attract this elusive generation.
